Bike and Walk Promotion

The Bicycle/Pedestrian Office and Missoula In Motion host many events that encourage people to bike and walk more frequently. Whether people are commuting, running errands, or just going to a friend's house, we want them to consider biking or walking before grabbing the car keys.

Bike Month: May in Motion

Missoula's annual celebration of National Bike Month features a variety of events, prizes, and giveaways to help folks get on their bikes. Ride with us, ride with friends, or ride by yourself. Just ride!

Events include Missoula In Motion's Commuter Challenge, National Bike to Work Day, Breakfast on the Bridges, and more. A full calendar of events can be found here.

First Friday Parklets and National PARK(ing) Day

Once a month in the summer and again in September, we transform a handful of on-street parking spaces downtown into small parks. These "parklets" often feature landscaping, art, and comfortable places to sit and mingle. By creating more space for people to socialize and take a break from walking, we invite the public to reconsider how we use our shared spaces. Join in the fun on First Friday downtown from May through September! The full parklet schedule, along with information about hosting a parklet, can be found on the Missoula in Motion website.

Sunday Streets Missoula

Sunday Streets Missoula temporarily closes one of downtown Missoula's main streets to cars and opens it to people, inviting folks to bike and walk in the relative safety of a car-free zone. Local businesses and organizations have booths that feature fun activities and information to help Missoulians stay active.

Bikeapalooza

Bikeapalooza is an annual community bike ride. The route showcases new trails and bike facilities that may be off-the-beaten-path for people who are new to biking. Want to start biking more but don't quite feel comfortable riding in an urban environment? Come ride with us at Bikeapalooza and let us show you the ropes! For more information about the next event, check here or email us.

Walk and Roll Week

Since 1992, Missoula has organized a week-long, community-wide celebration encouraging all Missoulians to travel sustainably by bicycle, bus, and on foot. For one week in September, we focus all of our attention on getting around Missoula in the most healthy and fun ways possible.

Over 50 local businesses and organizations provide support, including free activities and giveaways. Check out this full listing of free treats, group bike rides, historic walking tours, discounts, and other events. Grab your family, friends, and co-workers - and enjoy the journey!

Winter Clean Commute

Bike riding is not only a summer activity. In fact, going for a ride is a great way to warm up in the cooler months. Come join us for breakfast along the Riverfront Trail (PDF) the second Friday of February. For more information about this year's event, email us!

It has been said that there is no such thing as bad weather as long as you are prepared. (Gloves are the one item we can't ride without!) Check out this full list of winter riding tips from our partners at the University of Montana.
