About the Appointment

City Council member, Jordan Hess, has been appointed Mayor, and upon his swearing in for the Mayoral seat, a vacancy is created in ward 2.    Under the City Charter and State law, City Council now has 30 days from the date the ward vacancy was created to appoint someone to serve until a successor is elected and qualified in the November 2023 general municipal election.      
  • The position will be option for nomination in the 2023 municipal election.  The person elected in 2023 will serve the balance of  the term until the first Monday in January 2025.

At the 9/26 City Council meeting every candidate who applied was selected to interview..  Interviews will be conducted on September 28, 2022, at the City Council's Committee of the Whole meeting from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m.  The public is welcome and encouraged to attend in person or virtually.  Information about how to join the meeting is on the top of the agenda:

About the Position

The City Council is the policy making body of the City of Missoula. 

In order to be eligible for the office, applicants must be: 

  • a U.S. citizen,
  • a citizen of the State of Montana,
  • a resident in Ward 2 60 days prior to appointment (Ward Map),
  • a qualified elector registered and eligible to vote under state law, and
  • at least 18 years of age.
The position currently pays $1,444.60 per month plus City benefits.
