Energy Conservation & Climate Action in Missoula
The City of Missoula has a long history of conservation and climate action-related commitments, planning and work. Energy conservation and climate action activities maintain progress in the City's commitment to the triple bottom line: People, Planet, Prosperity.
Milestones
In order to achieve these goals, the City of Missoula has taken several formal steps to form measurable objectives including:
Current:
- In January 2013, the Missoula City Council passed Resolution 7753 (PDF), adopting the City of Missoula Conservation & Climate Action Plan(CCAP). Emissions reduction targets are:
- Target: Carbon Neutral by 2025
- Interim Goal Number 1:10% reduction by 2015 from 2008 baseline
- Interim Goal Number 2: 30% reduction by 2017 from 2008 baseline
- Interim Goal Number 3: 50% reduction by 2020 from 2008 baseline
- Target: Carbon Neutral by 2025
- Collaborated with Climate Smart Missoula on the Missoula Community Climate Smart Action Plan v1.0 (PDF). Endorsed by Mayor Engen July 2015.
Past:
- Signed the U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement
- Missoula City Council passed Resolution 7482 (PDF), which set a goal to reduce fuel consumption by 10% and energy consumption by 10% from 2007 levels by July 2011
- Engaged the University of Montana to conduct a comprehensive City of Missoula Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory
- Applied for and received Department of Energy, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funds for local project implementation
City Staff - Energy Conservation Coordinator
The Energy Conservation Coordinator works across all departments to coordinate implementation of the Conservation & Climate Action Plan and integrate concepts into municipal operations, infrastructure and services. Further plan implementation support and progress review come from the CCAP Technical Advisory Team made up of four Mayor appointees and four City Council appointees from the Energy and Climate Team, In addition, the Energy Conservation Coordinator serves as the City's representative and resource for community outreach, collaboration and engagement on energy conservation, climate action and sustainability efforts.

- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Reduction of building operating costs
- Promoting public and environmental health
- Promoting green jobs and green economy
- Providing community leadership by example
- Partnering with others to enhance opportunities for community-wide energy conservation and climate resiliency planning
