Many residents have reported seeing smoke on the southwest face of Mount Sentinel this morning. The fire is a controlled burn which is part of a forest restoration thinning project on City-owned open space. City contractors have a valid Burning Permit from Missoula County and are attending the fire. The Missoula Fire Department and 911 Emergency Services are aware of the project.
Tree thinning is an important forest management tool; it helps maintain the health and vigor of forested areas, reduce fire hazards and help prevent disease and insect infestation. The thinning project is funded by a grant from the Montana Department of Natural Resources.
We regret that residents didn’t receive prior notification of the controlled burn and we apologize for any alarm or inconvenience this project has caused.
