The Missoula Police Department's Detective Division is responsible for pursuing justice on behalf of victims of crimes against persons, property, and society.

There are 18 officers assigned to the Detective Division, including one Captain, one Lieutenant, and three Sergeants. There are three civilian personnel assigned as Evidence and Crime Scene Technicians, and transcriptionists.

Responsibilities
Detectives are assigned to investigate and assist in the prosecution of property crime including burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, stolen property and theft, embezzlement, fraud, forgery and counterfeiting, and weapons crimes.

Detectives are also assigned to investigate crimes against persons which include homicide, rape, assault, robbery, offenses against partners, and family members, and prostitution.

HIDTA
The Missoula Police Department is a member of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force, comprised of other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

HIDTA works cooperatively with these other agencies in the investigation and enforcement of illegal narcotic drug laws.

Evidence and Identification
The Evidence and Identification Section of the Detective division collects, maintains, and disposes of evidence and property according to accepted protocols.

Processing crime scenes, maintaining digital image evidence, preparing visual aids for court or Department presentations, and performing fingerprinting services and handwriting analysis are also functions of the Evidence and Identification Section.
