Making a few adjustments to your daily habits during Missoula In Motion's Clear the Air Challenge -- and any time of year -- can make a big difference in our air quality, which in turn improves the well-being of our entire community. Taking the bus, walking or carpooling can take a little more planning in the short term, but once the habit is formed, commuters will experience more pleasant trips, financial savings, less wear and tear on their vehicles, increased physical activity and a smaller impact on the environment.
Another element of the Clear the Air Challenge is educating individuals on the importance of not idling their vehicles. Idling is harmful to our air and simply unnecessary. According to Sustainable America, modern vehicles need no more than a few seconds to warm up. Additionally, if an engine is running for longer than 10 seconds, it is better and cheaper to just turn the vehicle off.
Engaging with employers is another key component of the challenge. By encouraging employees to participate, businesses can create a team to make an even bigger impact. Individuals and employers can join the challenge at www.missoulainmotion.com/cleartheair. Participants can use Way to Go! Missoula to find their commute options and compare them by dollars saved, carbon dioxide (CO2) diverted and calories burned. Individuals who divert the most C02 from each commute group will win a $25 Missoula Downtown Association gift card. Other prizes will be raffled off among all those that participate. Missoula In Motion understands that winter weather creates many barriers to sustainable commuting, but we encourage all Missoula residents to do what they can when they can.
