Extreme Cold Weather Expected

A strong arctic cold front is headed our way this week, with temperatures dropping significantly. Below are a list of resources for cold weather safety and tips.

Shelters prepare for life-threatening weather

The Johnson Street Temporary Emergency Shelter and the Poverello Center together can shelter almost 300 people in safe, warm environments. The Homeless Outreach Team will continue working to reach out to people who do not have shelter. The shelters serve hot meals and also provide sack lunches to take out. Both shelters offer services during the day and are staffed around the clock.

Want to help? Donations are welcome! Both shelters accept donations of supplies like warm clothes, warm bedding and sleeping bags, toiletries and toilet paper, as well as financial gifts to help support their efforts. Donors can take items to the Poverello Center at 1110 W. Broadway and to the Johnson Street shelter at Johnson Street and North Avenue.

The City of Missoula Public Works & Mobility Department has the following tips to help residents prevent frozen water pipes where you live.

  • Open lower kitchen and bathroom cabinets to let air reach pipes;
  • Keep basement and other windows near water pipes closed;
  • Don't allow cold air returns to blow on water pipes;
  • Briefly turn on all water fixtures every day during a cold snap;
  • Run hot water through pipes when possible.

If you have problems with your water, call Public Works at 406-552-6700.
