Water Main Replacement Project on S. 4th St. W. between Russell St. and Ivy St. Begins This Week

The City of Missoula's Public Works & Mobility Department will begin a project to replace the water main in S. 4th St. W. between Russell St. and Ivy St. this week. The contractor will begin setting up their equipment and signage this week with construction set to begin on July 15. The project is expected to be wrapped up by October 4, weather permitting.

Work will begin at the eastern end of the project with the first leg of the project running from Ivy St. near the bike path to S. California St. and will continue westward as blocks are completed. Travel on the Bitterroot Branch Trail will not be affected, and traffic on S. 4th St. W. will be detoured around the project area. Please see the construction area map and detour maps provided on the City's website at www.ci.missoula.mt.us/2668/Water-Projects.

The project involves replacing approx. 1,575 linear feet of 6-inch water main with 8-inch water main. This section of main includes both Priority 1 and Priority 2 water main that was originally installed in 1914 and 1941. This project was prioritized due to the water main's age, pipe material, and a history of leaks.

Replacing old water main helps to prevent unplanned service disruption for water utility customers. Also, replacing leaking pipes saves electricity used to run water pumps to move water that ends up leaking from the system before it reaches customers.

Additional information, as well as any necessary project updates, will be posted on the City's website at www.ci.missoula.mt.us/2668/Water-Projects.
