In response to the summer 2024 storm, the City has streamlined roofing permits to make it faster and easier for homeowners and contractors to get critical work underway. We’ve created a new ‘Roofing’ permit type that automatically issues the permit at the time of application. While these changes directly affect a relatively small number of projects, we are looking forward to applying what we have learned in this process to other permit types so we can continue to streamline services. 

• Immediate Issuance: Applicants can now apply, pay for, and in most cases, receive an issued roofing permit immediately saving days of waiting.
• No-wait inspection scheduling: Once issued, applicants can schedule underlayment inspections right away, supporting continuous roof project progress.
• Simplified Application: We’ve streamlined the application to collect only essential information – no more unnecessary fields or typing in descriptions.
• Efficiency gains: Last year 1,300 roofing permits were processed. The new process is expected to save 270 hours of staff time.

This change ensures that when urgent repairs are needed, Missoula residents and contractors can move quickly, while staff time is freed up to focus on other essential community services.
