Transportation Planning

Welcome!

Missoula is a wonderful place to live, work and play - and we are proud to be a leader in its development - creating a community where citizens can safely and conveniently reach any destination, whether walking, biking, driving, or busing.

The Transportation Planning Section has three distinct offices that work together to provide an active transportation system that offers the following benefits to citizens:

  • Economic development by creating a sense of place
  • Active lifestyles and healthy communities
  • Congestion mitigation
  • Local air quality and global carbon footprint
  • Reduced household transportation costs
  • Increased property values

We hope you enjoy your journey . . . and enjoy all that Missoula has to offer.

Transportation Planning

The Transportation Planning office staffs the Missoula Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and participates in and coordinates the transportation planning program for the Missoula urban area. This program is a collaborative effort and conducted in cooperation with the City and County of Missoula, Missoula Urban Transportation District (Mountain Line), Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and other local, State, and Federal agencies.

Missoula In Motion

Missoula In Motion (MIM) works to increase the use of sustainable transportation options in Missoula through education, recognition and incentive programs.  Way to Go! Missoula, workplace programs, and events like Sunday Streets or Walk & Roll, are helping reduce congestion, pollution and stress on our roadways while promoting an active, healthy community.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Program

The Bicycle/Pedestrian Office enhances active transportation options. Programs include Bike Racks for Businesses, Safe Routes to School, National Bike Month, Bike Walk Bus Week, Bicycle Ambassadors, and other safety and education campaigns. Together with our partners, the Bicycle/Pedestrian Office helps keep Missoula walkable and bikeable.
