Street Sweeping

Street Sweeping Program

Begins April 1, weather permitting

The Street Operations & Maintenance Division’s street sweeping program is scheduled to run from April through November this year. Residential streets within the city are swept two times per year, and commercial and downtown streets are swept once a week.

See the map and schedule to the right. Please note that dates are subject to change due to weather conditions and other factors.

Changes for 2025—What Should Residents Do?

Green ConeTo improve our efficiency and provide a cleaner street, Streets crews will put out green No Parking cones the day before they plan to sweep. Please help us by parking on the opposite side of the street when you see these cones. This allows us to do a better job of sweeping when we don't have to move around parked vehicles.

  • NEW FOR 2025—We will put out green cones the day before we are scheduled to sweep a particular side of a street as a reminder to park on the opposite side of the street because our crews will be out sweeping the side of the street with the green cones beginning at 7 a.m. the following morning.
  • Please continue to park on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd-numbered days of the month and on the even-numbered side on even-numbered days.
  • Ensure trees along the street adjacent to your property are pruned to a minimum of 14 feet over the street to the inside edge of the curb line (per Missoula Municipal Code 12.32). If your trees do not meet this requirement, the City may need to trim them so that our equipment can safely work under them.
  • Please help our Streets crews work efficiently and safely: Don’t dump yard waste or other materials onto streets or sidewalks, including dirt, landscaping materials, leaves, building materials, and construction fencing. It is a violation of Missoula Municipal Code 8.28.080. Crews pick up leaves in the fall only—usually in November.
  • SWEEPING SCHEDULE CHANGE—Please note that the order in which we sweep has changed in response to public comments and ideas and growth in the city. Special districts will be swept twice per season, the same frequency as the rest of the city as we attempt to make the best use of our resources as the city grows. Our goal is to sweep the entire city twice during sweeping season.

Sweeping During Other Times of the Year

The City spends much of the year sweeping:

Spring, Summer, and Fall
Streets are swept according to the schedule shown on the map at the top of this page.

Fall – Following Leaf Collection
Once leaves are collected, crews come by in sweepers to clean up any remaining leaf debris. This work is done as weather and temperature conditions allow.

Winter
City crews perform winter street cleaning when temperatures rise above 32 degrees. They follow the same priority map used for snowplowing and continue to sweep throughout the winter as weather and temperatures allow.

Did You Know?

The City has two different types of sweepers:

  • A Broom Bear sweeper is used to pick up larger material and has a conveyor belt that collects debris in a hopper and dumps into a dump truck. This is typically used to sweep sand in the spring.
  • The conventional sweeper uses a vacuum to collect smaller debris into a hopper that is emptied out of the back of the sweeper when full.
